Securing Your New Home
Moving into a new home? Congratulations! Before you move in, it’s important to secure your new home and that’s where Portland Locksmith and Garage Doors comes in.
For the last 10 years we have been serving the needs of customer throughout the Portland Metro area for locksmith and garage door services. A large number of our customers are new homeowners looking to secure their house.
Over the years we’ve developed a check list for homeowners looking to secure their new investment. The obvious place to start is the locks, but people often overlook the garage- and that is where we tell people to start- especially if your garage door includes an outside keypad. (You never know just how many people have the access code into your garage.)
Your garage is an important part of your house and often a storage place for valuables like tools, bicycles, and of course our cars. When moving into a new home- this is also the main entry point where movers often unload boxes of your valuables- to be stored until you can move them into the rest of the house.
Change the code to garage door keypad– located outside your garage door these have been raising in popularity for the ease of access they provide to homes- but they also prove to be a security risk if your code gets in the wrong hands.
Change the code on all your garage door openers – it’s possible the previous homeowner had multiple garage door openers and gave them out to their dog walker, nanny, housesitter, friends etc. Changing the code on your new garage door opener makes all other openers useless- expect for the ones you synch to.
Assess the condition of your garage doors– Most home inspections include a look at the garage door, but most are not completed by a certified garage door technicians. Our technicians at Portland Locksmith and Garage Door can inspect your garage and identify any areas that may need servicing. Your garage door is the largest point of entry into your home, it’s also the largest moving piece of machinery in your home, and deserves proper servicing to keep your family and your home secure.
Locks and Doors
Like the security of your garage doors you have no idea how many people were given keys to unlock the previous homeowner’s doors. They may have given spare keys to neighbors, nannies, relatives and even friends.
Start by assessing the conditions of all your doors and locks. Do the locks seem secure? When you give your locked doors a tug, do they feel loose? If so, they’re almost certainly not secured in the way that they’re designed to be secured. This is where an experienced locksmith will be able to help you determine if your locks are still good.
An inexpensive alternative to changing the locks on your external doors is the option to re-key your outside door locks. But if the locks are outdated, or an eyesore you may want to invest in a new, more secure locks. We especially love the ease of use for keyless entry locks and the convenience they provide.
The last places to look for security are your sliding doors and windows. Make sure they feel tight when locked- if not, one of our locksmith tehnicians can help you.
