Garage Door Services FAQ
We’ve compiled a quick guide to help you better understand your garage door, its components and commons issues that may arise.
Components of your Garage Door
The big three parts of a garage system are the springs, panels, and cables. Every part plays an important role in ensuring a smooth running garage door.
CABLES – The Cables connect the garage door to the motorized opener, so your door opens and closes at the push of a button.
SPRINGS – The springs are one of the most important components of your garage door. The spring is what creates a counterbalance on your garage door to ensure that it moves properly.
DOOR PANELS – The Garage Door Panels make up your garage door. They are in sections to enable the door to round the top of the track to fully open.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can you tell if your garage door is damaged?
Sometimes the damage will be all too obvious, in the form of dented, cracked, or crumpled doors. However, there are also more subtle clues to tell you something is wrong, such as:
Potential causes include problematic springs, door imbalance, or garage door-opener motor issues.
In this case, you most likely have a broken spring.
A leaky garage door seal can allow water, insects, dirt and debris to creep into your garage space. If your garage door’s seal isn’t what it used to be, you can easily replace your existing seal with a new one. You can purchase new weather stripping at your local home improvement store, some even come in garage-specific kits with adhesive and a caulking gun for extra sealing.
A sagging wooden door may need its tension rods adjusted, or it could be rotting due to age and moisture damage.
This indicates that the springs are unbalanced.
Newer garage doors include sensors to prevent a door from closing on a child or pet. If your garage door is lowering, then reversing back to the open position, there could be something obstructing the sensors. Check to be sure these two sensors on either side of your garage door frame are aimed correctly at each other and all the way across the width of the frame.
This might be due to a broken spring, a malfunctioning signal, or a problem with its tracks.
A dead wall switch might seem like the end of the road for your opener, but it’s likely a solvable power issue. Because this deals with electrical- it’s best to call a licensed Garage Door technician.
Why Does My Garage Door Reverse As Soon As It Hits The Ground?
Imagine you’re trying to leave the house and you just can’t get your garage door to stay closed. This is a common garage door issues, and below is a list of quick things that could be causing the problem.
- Travel down setting needs to be adjusted.
Your garage door is programmed to travel a certain distance before it closes. If it closes before that distance has been traveled, it thinks something is wrong — and it reopens to help prevent any damage or safety risk. But changes in weather conditions can cause your garage door components to shift or contract. When that happens, the distance your garage door needs to travel may change. In cases like this, your “travel down” setting needs to be adjusted to the new distance. - Limit Switch needs to be adjusted
Much like your travel down setting, your garage door opener’s limit switch governs where your garage door stops when being raised or lowered. If your garage door isn’t staying open or closed, you may need to adjust your limit switch. - Logic board needs replacement
Your garage door’s logic board is the brain of your garage door opener. This brain can wear out in time so you could need a replacement. When the logic board wears out, it can cause your garage door to close, then open (and vice versa) without explanation. Before you break out your toolbox, you should call a professional for help.
Common Problems with Garage Door Panels Which May Need Replacement
If a portion of your garage ends up getting smashed, then you might have to replace the whole door, which can be very expensive. However, depending on the damage you may only need to repair some of the panels that were broken. This is a significantly cheaper repair option.
When one panel becomes damaged, it can easily spread to other panels during normal use. For this reason, don’t open or close your garage door after the initial damage takes place. Instead, call one of our licensed garage technicians right away to come and tell you if you can get away with just replacing some of the panels.
You should have your garage door inspected once a year
